Privacy Policy

Markly ("we," "us," "our") is an LLM-powered study and exam-marking tool built for CIE A-Level students. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

1. Information We Collect

When you use Markly, we collect:

Account information: your email address and password (securely hashed - we never see or store your plain-text password).
Content you submit: questions, mark schemes, and answers you type or upload (including images/PDFs) for marking, flashcards, quizzes, or tutoring.
Usage data: your subject selections, XP, streaks, quiz/flashcard performance, and how many free tries you've used.
Payment information: if you subscribe to Markly Pro, our payment processor (Polar) collects your payment details directly - we never see or store your card number.

2. How We Use Your Information

To generate LLM-powered marking, explanations, flashcards, and quizzes tailored to what you submit.
To track your progress (XP, streaks, weak areas) so Markly can adapt to how you're doing.
To manage your account, free-trial limits, and (if applicable) your Pro subscription.
To communicate with you about your account (e.g. confirming your email, subscription status).
To improve Markly's accuracy and fix bugs.

3. Who We Share Information With

We don't sell your personal information. We do share limited data with the following third parties, only as needed to operate Markly:

Our LLM provider: the questions, mark schemes, and answers you submit are sent to a third-party large language model to generate your feedback, subject to that provider's own API terms.
Supabase: our database and authentication provider, which securely stores your account and progress data.
Polar: our payment processor, which handles subscription billing. Polar acts as the merchant of record for Pro subscriptions.

We don't share your submitted answers or personal data with any other third party, and we don't use your data to train LLM models ourselves.

4. Data Security

We use industry-standard practices to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure password hashing, and database-level access controls (Row Level Security) so your data can only be accessed by you or Markly's backend systems - never by other users.

5. Data Retention

We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. If you'd like your account and associated data deleted, contact us (see Section 9) and we'll remove it, except where we're required to retain records for legal or tax purposes (e.g. payment records).

6. Children's Privacy

Markly is built for A-Level students, many of whom are under 18. We don't knowingly collect more information than is necessary to provide the service, and we don't use student data for advertising or sell it to third parties. If you're a parent or guardian and have concerns about your child's use of Markly, please contact us.

7. Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal information. You can request any of these by contacting us directly.

If you're located in the EU/UK (GDPR): you have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, including requesting deletion of your data, contact us at heymarkly@gmail.com and we'll respond within a reasonable timeframe.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as Markly grows. If we make material changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of Markly after changes means you accept the updated policy.
